Last month, in a surprise move, Mayor Wheeler transferred the jurisdiction of Portland’s Bureau of Parks & Recreation (PP&R) to Commissioner Nick Fish.
Because we think Moreland Woods exemplifies exactly the kind of rare urban natural space PP&R says it wants to preserve, we reached out to Commissioner Fish…and THIS FRIDAY, October 12, we’ll be meeting with him to discuss Moreland Woods!
When we meet, we want to make it clear to him how many people support the preservation of this special place. That’s why we’re calling on you to sign one of 500 postcards of support — postcards we’ll hand-deliver to the Commissioner that day!
But the clock is ticking. Here’s how you can help:
1. We need your signature.
For the next seven days, you’ll find postcards, pens, and drop-off boxes at four locations throughout the neighborhood:
On Bybee Boulevard…
- Starbucks
- Nectar Frozen Yogurt Lounge
On 13th Avenue…
- Sellwood-Moreland Library
- Portland Bottle Shop
(After you sign, you’ll leave your signed postcard there in a collection box.)
2. We need your help.
We need volunteers interested in helping us distribute and collect the cards.
On Wednesday, October 10, we’ll be at the Moreland Farmer’s Market. We could use some help between 2 and 5 p.m. Got an hour to spare for a great local cause?
Here’s the catch, though: All this has to happen within one week.
We have just seven days to distribute 500 cards, get them signed, collect them, and present them to Commissioner Fish. That’s not much time.
But we think we can do it! And we will…with your help.
Next Friday’s meeting with Commissioner Fish represents a huge break for Moreland Woods. Please support us as we seize this rare opportunity to make potential progress in protecting a neighborhood treasure — a haven for birds and wildlife, a two-acre forest of mature trees, and a peaceful spot for current and future generations to enjoy.
Get involved! Sign a postcard! (And get your family members to sign one, too!) Be a part of something positive in your neighborhood!
